Using Macromedia Contribute 3
As long as another Contribute user has a draft of the page that they are either currently working on
or have “saved for later”, the file will remain locked. Only when a Contribute draft is “published” or
“cancelled”, will the file be unlocked. Likewise, a Dreamweaver user must “Check in” the file before
it will be unlocked and available for editing with Contribute.
If you see a message telling you that another user is currently editing the page you wish to edit, you
should contact that user to determine whether or not they are currently editing the page. It may
sometimes be the case that the user has checked the file out, finished their editing, but forgotten to
check the file back in, or they may have an unpublished draft of the page which they have simply
forgotten about.
Editing and Inserting Text
You can add text to a web page by typing the text, by copying and pasting text, or by dragging text
from another application to your Contribute draft. You can also add the entire contents of a
Microsoft Word or Excel document to a web page - see section on Inserting Content Directly from
Microsoft Office Documents for more information.
You can enter and edit text just as you would with Word. To enter text, use the cursor to place the
insertion point in the draft (you must be in Edit Mode), then type the text. To edit text, use the
cursor to highlight the text. You can then delete it, or format it using the toolbar options or the drop
down menus (Figure 23).

Notes:
The web site administrator can determine the amount of space that pressing Enter adds
between paragraphs. If this is set to automatically enter a double line paragraph break, and you
wish to only enter a single line break, simply hold down the Shift key when you press Enter. The
default setting is to only to move down one line each time the Enter key is pressed.
On a web page multiple blank spaces are usually only rendered as a single white space. With
Contribute, the site administrator can determine if multiple blank spaces are displayed or not
(the default is to show multiple blank spaces). If this is set to only display one blank space if
multiple spaces are pressed, and you want to enter more than a single space, press Ctrl - Shift -
Space. This enters what Contribute calls a non-breaking space.
N.B. Multiple blank spaces should be used with care, as you cannot guarantee how they will
appear in every browser. It is much better to use Tables or cascading style sheets (CSS) to
control layout.
You can add special characters such as a copyright symbol or pound sign using the Insert > Special
characters drop down menu option (Figure 24):
